It doesn’t take too many readings of the above headline, a standard phrase used to promote sales, to see its fallacy. However, buying things on sale makes all the sense in the world if an item we were going to buy anyway is on sale. Recent articles from “Smart Money”:http://www.smartmoney.com/consumer/index.cfm?story=20060824&src=fb&nav=RSS20 and the “Motley Fool”:http://www.fool.com/news/commentary/2006/commentary06082604.htm listed lots of ways to spend less on common purchases. For example, for those who spend some of their entertainment budget on restaurant meals, the Smart Money article recommended two web sites (“Restaurant.com”:http://www.restaurant.com and “DinnerBroker.com”:http://www.dinnerbroker.com) for discounts on such meals.

p(matt). Another way to spend less is to buy gifts throughout the year instead of waiting until you hear reindeer on the roof before starting your Christmas shopping. Gift giving, especially during the year-end holiday period, can be a major budget buster. Make a list of the people you plan to buy gifts for this year, set a budget, and then look for sales on appropriate gifts. You’ll spend less, and you’ll be able to sleep in the day after Thanksgiving instead of lining up for the pre-dawn door-buster deals at your local mega-store.
